What would cause the top of my foot and my toes to turn purple,and swell.?

I have plaque build up around my aorta.now my feet and toes are turning purple at times and they swell and itch,they hurt only if i touch them. my doctor ordered a ultra sound. what would he be checking for and does this have anything to do with the plaque build up around my aorta?
