How to make kitchen cabinets looks nicer?

my kitchen is a bit small i have simple cabinets that are painted in white. looks cheap and simple, i want to change the color and leave it bright so it looks bigger,floor color is white ceramic tiles. i was thinkin in painting the cabinets in beige and the sides in blue but my husband told me it will look horible so i dont know, any ideas will be thankful.
