Stopping spam emails sent to my contacts on my aol email?

When replying to a craigslist personal add I think my email was invaded and now all the people on my contacts are being sent either viagra emails or they are being sent an email which shows that I tried to contact an email address off of craigslist. This is very embarassing. I have deleted all the emails in my system, and I have also deleted my whole contact list. Will this help?
